Wittenberg Education Steering Committee

Wittenberg Education Steering Committee

The Steering Committee for Education is up-and-running. We have an outstanding committee, made up of the following people:

  • Dr. Jack Preus, Executive Vice President for Mission Advancement at Bethesda Lutheran Communities (Convener)
  • Dr. Patrick Ferry, President of Concordia University Wisconsin
  • Dr. Brian Friedrich, President of Concordia University Nebraska
  • Dr. Lisa Keyne, Executive Director, North Carolina Campus Compact
  • Dr. Cameron Mackenzie, Professor, Concordia Theological Seminary, Ft. Wayne
  • Dr. Timothy Quill, Director of International Theological Education for the LCMS
  • Rev. Gregory Seltz, Lutheran Hour Speaker
  • Rev. David Mahsman, On-site Coordinator in Wittenberg

Our goal is to create a comprehensive plan for educational or inspirational programs to be carried out in the Old Latin School in Wittenberg. We hope to present a diverse “menu” of academic and non-academic options that would appeal to the needs of a variety of people, from youth servant events, to college and seminary students, to church-workers, to learning opportunities for lay people, to elder-hostels and the like. We would like the renovated facility to be used as much as possible.

Although we’re in the early stages of planning, the following outlines in broad strokes some of what we’re thinking. Committee chairs are being selected and working groups gathered to provide programs in the following five general areas?

  1. Theological Studies, including but not limited to,
  • History of the Reformation
  • Luther Studies
  • Ecclesiastical/Church Relations studies
  • Missions
  1. The Arts, including, but not limited to,
  • Music
  • Art History
  1. Human Services, including, but not limited to,
  • Christian education
  • Social Services
  • Cultural Dynamics
  1. General Studies, including, but not limited to,
  • International Business
  • International Studies
  • German Language and History
  • ESL/TESL (teachers and learners)
  1. Service/Outreach/Pilgrimage, including
  • Design and implement specific service/outreach projects
  • Ensure that service/outreach elements are appropriately included in all other programs.
